Exploring the Depths: My Transformative Experience at a Yoga, Sex, & Death Retreat in Guatemala

Lake Atitlan

This summer brought me on a journey of self-discovery and inner transformation. I recently attended a unique week long retreat nestled amidst the lush landscapes in Guatemala. I knew at one point in my life I would need to attend something like this, and what better timing then the start of my summer travels. This unconventional gathering promised to dive into the realms of yoga, sex, and death – three facets of life often shrouded in mystery and taboo. This course is a study on the relationship between yoga, sacred sexuality, and death through a deeper examination of the two main themes that connect them: INTIMACY  + LETTING GO. Let’s not forget about the 3 days of silence! I won’t spoil too much of that, just know that it is a practice everyone should consider at least once.

Set against the backdrop of Lake Atitlán at the luxurious Villa Sumaya, surrounded by ancient volcanoes and a vibrant Mayan culture, the retreat's location itself held a certain magic. The serene environment was very fitting for introspection and growth that was about to occur. To be honest, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

The heart of this journey was Susan Marrufo, the visionary founder and seasoned facilitator of the Y.S.D Retreat and the Samarasa Center. With years of experience in guiding individuals towards self-discovery and holistic well-being, Susan brought a wealth of wisdom and a understanding of the human spirit to our group of 8 women from all of the United States. Her nurturing presence and guidance provided a safe foundation for our exploration of yoga, sexuality, and mortality.

Location: Villa Sumaya on Lake Atitlan

In the embrace of Guatemala's Lake Atitlán, Villa Sumaya served as a sanctuary for our journey. With deliciously curated meals and a commitment to nurturing guests, this family-run retreat center left an indelible mark on our hearts. Their 20-year vision of awakening potential through holistic experiences is palpable in every moment.

Practicing for hours in the Tara Temple that overlooked the tranquil Lake Atitlán was an experience of pure serenity. The gentle lapping of the water against the shore and the distant calls of birds created a soothing backdrop to our inner exploration. The temple's sacred space held a profound sense of peace, which only helped with our practice and deepening our connection to the moment.

Villa Sumaya’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to personal growth and transformation was evident in every detail. From the carefully curated spaces for meditation and yoga to the nurturing atmosphere that permeated the entire center, even the treatments offered, it was clear that Villa Sumaya was more than just a retreat venue—it was a sanctuary dedicated to the journey of self-discovery and inner awakening.

Embracing Yoga: The Journey Inward

The 7-night retreat started every morning with a deep dive into yoga, not merely as a physical practice, but as a holistic approach to harmonizing mind, body, and spirit. Guided by a seasoned instructor, we flowed through asanas, focusing on breath and intention. Each posture became a metaphor for life's ebbs and flows, reminding us to find balance even in the midst of challenges. Even though I regularly participate in yoga classes, it was enlightening to learn which poses aligned with our chakras. The flow of the poses progressed as the week went on.

Redefining Taboos: The Exploration of Sexuality

One of the most transformative aspects of the retreat was its candid approach to sexuality. Susan led open discussions about intimacy, desire, and the importance of healthy connections from past to future. We closely examined our own relationship to each to discover where we’re blocked and experience how these blockages of sexual energy directly relate to all other aspects of our lives. Workshops encouraged us to shatter societal stigmas and embrace our authentic selves in this deeply personal realm. Through respectful dialogue and exercises, we discovered the power of vulnerability and communication in our relationships. Something that is truly so powerful.

Confronting Mortality: Embracing the Inevitable

Perhaps the most profound and poignant aspect of the retreat was its exploration of death. In a society that often avoids discussing mortality, this retreat provided a safe space to confront our own impermanence. When most of us think about death (or the groundlessness of life itself), we feel sadness or anxiety in the face of insecurity. Through guided meditations and contemplative practices, we were encouraged to reflect on the preciousness of life and the importance of living authentically, free from fear.

The Alchemy of Integration

As the days unfolded, it became evident that these three seemingly disparate themes were intricately interwoven. The yoga practice served as a foundation for self-awareness, providing a conduit for the exploration of sexuality and mortality. By embracing each element, I found a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of life's experiences.

A New Beginning

Leaving the retreat, I felt a shift within myself. The layers of conditioning and societal norms had begun to peel away, revealing a more authentic version of who I am. I carried with me a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper connection to my body, and a heightened awareness of the fleeting nature of life. Talk about the ultimate way to start the summer and my 32nd birthday.

Getting there

Getting there is apart of the journey. Most likely you will be flying into La Aurora International Airport (GUA), in Guatemala City, Guatemala. From there you will take a 3.5 hour shuttle, followed with a 15 minute boat ride to the property. With expert guidance and detail that you will find in the group chat and thanks to Kan's Tours, our travel was a seamless transition from Guatemala City to the serene shores of Lake Atitlán.

Final Thoughts

The Yoga, Sex, Death Retreat in Guatemala was full of life lesson that I didn’t realize I needed. As a group we transcended boundaries and explored the depths of our existence. It challenged preconceived notions and encouraged us to embrace the full spectrum of human experience. It was honestly one big intense therapy session in itself! This retreat was not just a physical or mental exercise, but a soul-stirring adventure that left an indelible mark on my heart, truly something I will never forget.

This journey gifted me with new sisters from around the world, love, authenticity, and has guided me towards a path of compassion and inner wisdom.
